Futile Efforts Series

2020 Performances, varying duration

In the first months of the pandemic, without access to my studio and workshops, I attempted to find a way of working that was simple both in execution and expression. With a camera and a set of instructions written beforehand, I went to desolate areas in the Hague and performed small gestures repeatedly. These were actions such as running up and down a hill, burying one’s head in sand, or counting the layers of a tree trunk, over and over again. They played with the form of advice that was circulating on social media at the time regarding how to stay sane in isolation by way of establishing routines or making progress on one’s own. The futility of the actions served to reflect on the apparent meaninglessness of doing anything in the vacuum of isolation.
